Questions to ask before hiring a scaffolder

Compare the whole job and safety arrangements, not just a headline day rate. These prompts can help you request like-for-like quotations.

1. Explain what the scaffold is for

Tell the supplier whether it is for roof repairs, chimney work, an extension, painting, solar panels, temporary roofing or a larger commercial project. Different jobs can need different access arrangements.

2. Share the site conditions

Give the full address and postcode. Mention narrow access, sloping ground, conservatories, public pavements, neighbours' access or any other constraint that could affect delivery or erection.

3. Ask what's included

  • Site visit or survey, if needed.
  • Design or calculations where required by the project.
  • Delivery, erection and dismantling.
  • Hire period and how extensions are charged.
  • Alterations if the work changes.
  • Inspection and handover arrangements.

4. Confirm competence and insurance

Ask about relevant training, qualifications, insurance and the company's safety procedures. For complex or unusual structures, ask who is responsible for scaffold design and what documentation will be supplied.

5. Agree communication and timing

Confirm the expected erection date, the date the scaffold is likely to be removed, and who to contact if the building schedule changes. Make sure the hire period and any extensions are written down.

6. Check highway permissions if relevant

If the scaffold will occupy a road, pavement or other public highway, contact the relevant local authority or ask the supplier to explain what permission is needed. Do not assume the supplier's quote automatically includes any council licence or fee.

Compare written quotes

Ask two or three suppliers for quotes using the same description of the job. A low price may exclude important elements or assume a shorter hire period, so compare the inclusions carefully.
